Asia, ~ 5 months Female Bull Dog
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Asia is a precious 5 month old female Bull Dog / Sharpei? mix who lost her home suddenly when the Land Lord ordered her out. She was raised with small children and was very sweet with them. She was also raised with another dog. She didn't deserve this and doesn't know what happened to her. She likes to play with toys and chase a ball. She rides nicely in the car. She has a mild skin issue that we are resolving homeopathically and her fur is starting to grow back in. Her markings look Rottie but her size is like a large Boston Terrier at this point -- she's going to grow some more for sure. Her parents were Bull Dog mixes. She is available to meet once you complete your application. She will be here on Sunday, Mother's Day to meet. More about Asia from her foster mom:
Asia loves and I do mean loves to sit in your lap- for hours- she will fall asleep and she "snores"
Asia goes into her crate and will settle down quite nicely- but sometimes she will gnaw on the wire- she wants out!
Asia has no food aggressions but does dance at your feet when she sees her bowl being filled - so much so that she could trip you- very exuberant.
She -like most pups pees immediately when she has to - she is finally getting it about going outside and is very proud of herself, but please expect a few accidents in the beginning. She does not alert you with sound- she will pace just a few times and then squat! So you must have an eye on her and try to remember that her bowel and bladder are small and so she goes frequently. She loves the praise and tries real hard!!
She is not so much into balls or toys but will tug a war with you.
Once a day usually in the early evening- she will do the "Puppy ricochet" and she zips around in between your legs up and over things and then she is done!
She would love to confront the cats- she is curious- but is also afraid (as she should be - smart pup) but my one cat that is nice -she is good with nose to nose not chasing and no snapping! So I would say good with cats when supervised.
Asia is very interested in trash! We have been working on the command NO - still a work in progress! Also sit, let's go, down- she needs more time on these-
she likes to chew her leash but walks really nicely- no pulling as of yet.
Asia - likes the car but will climb into your lap- so needs to be restrained.
She is terrific and friendly to all ages of kids.
Asia does not make much noise- no barking an occasional woof- but very light- little growls when the trees rustle or a shadow scares her- she is a city girl and not used to backyard noises! She seems afraid of loud trucks and motorcycles going by- she will run and jump on your lap for protection.
Asia sometimes jumps up on your leg as you walk- I have been working on "down' with her and she knows - but will -just decides she doesn't have the impulse control to last very long yet.
Asia needs someone who will cuddle her and be gentle- that is what she loves- I can not stress enough- she is a LAP dog!!
I fell asleep on the couch and she slept with her head in the crook of my neck for an hour today-I awoke and she didn't, it was quite heartwarming!
She will look at you to make sure everything is okay- and to know where you are at all times.
Please fill out an application if you are interested in her.

Adopted
Bambi is a very sweet 3.5 yr. old small breed mix who is extremely affectionate and desperate for a home of her own. She has big brown "Bambi" eyes, hence the name. She will follow you all day, sit in your lap, and sleep in your bed. She plays with all size puppies. She ignores cats, walks on leash beautifully, and loves to ride in the car. She has big brown "Bambi" eyes, hence the name. She is originally from TN and was recently adopted but returned because the family never had a dog before and could not read her signs to go out and pee so she started having accidents and was returned. She has been beautifully house trained in her two previous foster homes and never once had an accident. She is back with us now and no more accidents. For Bambi's sake, an experienced dog adopter is preferred so that she doesn't get bounced around again. She is used to being on furniture so if the couch if "off-limits" she might not be the dog for you. She's little, though, less than 25 lbs. Please fill out the application online if you're interested in coming and meeting her. She will most likely be shown on the weekend. as we are rely on a volunteer-based staff to show the dogs we need to see a completed application before asking them to give up their Saturday or Sunday. It's a five minute investment on your part, so we appreciate your information. The application is at no cost to you other than a few minutes of your time.

Bernie, ~ 4 months Male Great Pyrennes / Retriever
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Bernie is a very sweet and lovable 35 lb. Great Pyr / Retriever mix puppy who will make a wonderful companion for the right adopter. He loves everything and everybody, and possesses a very playful and laid-back personality. He was rescued by his current family after being abandoned in the country, and has spent much of his time kenneled outside. He's growing by leaps and bounds and will eventually weigh about 100 lbs. Great Pyrs need a lot of space and love the outdoors, so we're looking for a country setting where he can be an indoor dog with the option of being outside when he wants. We promised his rescuers that we would find him a home with another dog his equal to play with, so please do not be offended if we turn you down for him. He is a beautiful peach-blonde color, with very soft hair that doesn't shed. He's brushed often and loves the attention. He's good with both dogs and cats and enjoys a good-spirited chase now and then. If you are interested in this special puppy, please have breed experience as Great Prys are protective and need their space. We are seeking a "country setting" for him with a big yard so that he will flourish in his forever home and also just in case he develops Great Pyr traits. Please fill out an application if you are interested. He will arrive 5/7 and be vetted on 5/9 and available after that, but will most likely be shown on the weekend. as we are rely on a volunteer-based staff to show the dogs we need to see a completed application before asking them to give up their Saturday or Sunday. Her foster mom reports that she has really blossomed since being rescued. She was never in a house before so it took some time to gain the courage to step across the threshold to become a pet, not just a dog. She did not know how to play with toys or other dogs, but is a happy dog running and playing with the rest of the foster dogs now. Betty has never shown any interest in cats, she ignores them. In fact, she has been very good with all nine other dogs in foster, small ones and big dogs as well. She is very quiet; you will seldom hear her bark; she has a very low shedding coat. she will sleep quietly all night and when you open the bedroom door in the morning she is so happy that you are there it makes you smile. Kobe, ~ 18 - 24 months Male Beagle / Spaniel
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Meet Kobe, a young Beagle mix who is estimated to be between 12-18 months old. He's a nice dog who loves to play and is so much fun to watch. He runs up and down the exercise area like he's racing an imaginary buddy! He has a blast. What a cute pup. He will need some training but he shows a lot of promise and he loves to play with other dogs. He would be great for the dog park or doggy day care. Here's what his rescuer says about him: This little guy is typical Beagle: Very friendly, loves attention, and is full of energy! Kobe was abandoned when his people split up after a domestic dispute. He wandered the neighborhood for four days getting into neighbors' garbage before somebody took him in. However, he wasn't happy in an enclosure away from people and vocalized his loneliness (which doesn't work in a crowded neighborhood), so he came to Friends for Life. He enjoys the company of other dogs although he's a bit much for the senior dogs! He's been wormed, and was neutered on 2/16/12. He's about 1.5 to 2 yrs. old and weighs just 23 lbs. He is calm and friendly. One of the techs at the vet's said he'd be a "good kid's dog". He's a good passenger in the car! When I picked him up at the vet's from his neuter, Kobe either sat in the passenger seat looking straight ahead or got up on his back legs to sniff at the window (I had it open a couple inches for him). When I had to make a stop and wait for about 15 minutes, he just curled up on the seat and waited quietly. But don't be mistaken- he's not much of a couch potato, but is not a wild child either! If you're looking to add a "spark" to your life, he will supply that!
He's available around 4/26/12. Please apply online before coming to meet him.

Adopted
Cassie, Lexi, and Roxi are very sweet puppies born to their mother, Bella, a full-blooded German Shepherd, on 3/13/12. They will be available for adoption at 8-9 weeks. They are really sweet, calm puppies who love to play, explore, and be cuddled. They weigh around 10 lbs at 6 weeks and we expect they will be big dogs like Mama. They are getting started on crate training, but are paper trained and are already doing their business outside regularly. They will need Shepherd-savvy adopters (preferred) as Shepherds have protective traits. They are great with children, but you have to know the breed. We are looking for FOREVER homes for these precious babies. Please apply online if you are interested in adopting one of these puppies. Lexie is the smaller of the two black and tan girls. She loves to explore and play and also loves to be held. They are all sweet and gentle and will need loving, experienced, gentle homes. They witnessed one of their litter mates being abused so they will need very gentle adopters who also understand the Shepherd breed as Shepherds, although fabulous with children, do grow to be very protective.

MAGGIE FOUND A HOME!!! Thanks so much to everyone who sponsored her!!!
**************
I was just saying to myself this morning, "Maggie", I said, "You know what you need? You need a person all of your own." So, I decided to update my description. I need a nice person who would like an extremely smart, loveable, slightly senior dog like me who is... I shudder to type this...LAPLESS. That's right, I have no lap to call my own. Could you possibly be the lap I have been patiently waiting for? Maggie is a very sweet 12 lb ~8 year old Doxie/Chi mix who deserves a loving home. She's a great little dog. What a wonderful companion she would make for someone. She is doing awesome in her foster home too. She is very sweet, doesn't bother cats and gets along with other dogs. Maggie had some medical issues that were resolved before arriving at Save A Dog. She has had a recent dental cleaning and is ready to go. She does have a heart murmur, but that is not too unusual for her age. Please give her the home she greatly deserves.

Mitzi, ~ 15 months Female Chihuahua

Adopted
Mitzi is a young 12 lb. apple head Chihuahua who is looking for her forever family. She listens very well, you only have to tell her once and she obeys. She comes when called and is good on leash, but pulls when she's excited. She LOVES the car, rides great. She has a good appetite. She loves her toys and if she knows the toy is hers she will not share with other dogs (she's fostered with 3 other dogs right now and is the Queen Bee with the 3 males). She is SO AFFECTIONATE with people and just wants to be with you, but is not clingy. She's not a dog to be in a crate all day. Her story is this:
Mitzi was found by a woman who could not keep her so she was given to a very nice rescuer in TN. She had been in foster care for 6 weeks and the foster provider knew her very well. Mitzi has lived with dogs and cats and she gets along fine with all, but she can be bossy with some females like any typical small dog. All you have to say is NO and she listens. She is very obedient and just wants to please. She likes to sleep in bed with her foster mama. She is house trained but needs to be let out to go. Mitzi loves to ride in the car and will follow you around to see what you are doing. She is not shy and would be a great companion dog. Molly, ~ 7 years Female Rat Terrier
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Molly is a ~7 yr old 12 lb. female Rat Terrier mix who is looking for her forever family. She is an adorable little dog. She might have a little Italian Greyhound in her.
Molly was rescued from an animal shelter in TN. When her owners left her at the shelter, she screamed. It was so heart-breaking to see. She was not adapting to the shelter well at all as she had always been a house dog. Needless to say she is insecure right now and will need someone with some patience to help her regain her sense of security back. She has been in foster a short time and has been doing very well. At first she would always follow foster mom and never let her out of her sight, but is not so needy anymore and is really beginning to relax and not worry. Although she is 7 yrs. old, you would never guess it as she is very active and spunky, prancing all around. She gets along with all the dogs and cats at the foster home. She is house trained and has had no accidents. She doesn't enjoy the crate, but as an adult dog, she won't need the crate for long as she's not destructive. She walks well on her leash and has all vetting updated. She is a pretty little dog and seems pretty healthy. She would probably do best in a home where people are around, especially in the beginning so that she can settle in. She loves attention and will be a very loyal dog and deserves a family that will love her and never abandon her. She is available on or around 4/26/12.

HE FOUND A HOME!!! THANKS SO MUCH, EVERYONE WHO SPONSORED OLIVER!
Hi! My name is Oliver and I am a 9 year old neutered male Golden Retriever / Shepherd mix who was adopted from Save A Dog in 2002. My family had a baby and I was too nervous once the baby became a toddler, so now I need a new home. I am a sweet, affectionate dog who likes to play, cuddle, go for walks, and just hang out with you. I am eager to please and will do anything for a treat. If you tell me to 'wait', you can balance treats on my nose and paws and I won't eat them until you say it is okay. I know "Sit, Down, Stay, Wait, 1-2-3 Jump, Spin, Go-Find-It, Find-the-Ball, Find-the-Rope, Go-to-bed, Wave Bye-Bye, Dance, and Touch. I will bring in your newspaper for you. I'm a really smart dog. My ears are very soft and when I wake up, one often sticks up like I've got bed head. I learn names quickly and enjoy playing hide and seek. I am crate trained, house trained, invisible fence trained, a graduate of obedience courses, and an excellent walker on and off lead. I am a gentle dog, but would be best suited with a family with older children because I occasionally have seizures. I take medication for it and it's under control. I am okay with other dogs too and am living with a female dog. I wasn't raised with cats, but am okay as long as they keep their distance. I would love a home to live out my senior years, one without toddlers or young dogs jumping on me. I still have a lot to offer and will not get into your stuff or mess up your house. I'm a really good dog. If you are interested in meeting me, please fill out an application as I will most likely be in a foster home. Thank you so much! Please fill out an application if you would like to meet me as I'm in a foster home and would need to be brought to the shelter to meet you. i hope you pick me. I have a lot to offer.

She enjoys chasing and playing with her 3 yr old American Eskimo mix foster sister. Recon is an adorably playful puppy. He's around 4 months old. We think he's a Coon Hound mix. His TN foster mom worked with him a lot, so he is 98% house broken with a dog door. He already walks on a leash, does not jump up, and loves to play with other dogs. Bambi was his best buddy for awhile until she came to us a couple of weeks ago. He is very low key for a puppy, and is not demanding at all. He will play fetch, loves to go for walks on his leash. When he gets up in the morning, he goes out the dog door first thing to do his duty! He will sleep downstairs when there are other dogs, but gets lonely and howls when he is alone. He like cats but is a little enthusiastic about them so no cats. He takes food gently unless it is really good, then he forgets and might get your finger. He is available on or around 4/26/12.

Skip is an 18 month old Australian Shepherd / Border Collie mix who was tied to the door of an animal shelter after hours. Who would ever give up such a gorgeous dog! He's recently been neutered and is now looking for a new home. The shelter in Indiana where he was left had very many dogs and he got along with everyone, even sharing a kennel with some. He is definitely a Border Collie / Australian Shepherd, probably shouldn't go with children who like to run and play because of his herding instincts. Quiet tweens or teens would be fine and/or teens interested in getting involved in the training would be fine. He is not a dog to sit home while you're at work, so if your family has a flexible schedule that can offer this gorgeous dog the exercise he needs, then we will have a match made in heaven. Too many dogs get displaced because the owners do not train or exercise their dogs and that is probably why Skip was relinquished. He will most likely be shown on the weekend. as we are rely on a volunteer-based staff to show the dogs we need to see a completed application before asking them to give up their Saturday or Sunday. Meet Spike, a 1 year old Irish Terrier mix who weighs about 45 lbs. He was surrendered by a family with small children when they had to move, and he was in foster care in TN for about three weeks before coming up north for adoption. He's a terrific dog who is very sweet, gentle, and loving. He was never allowed in the house with his original family, but now he's housebroken with the doggie door and loves to sleep inside. He's a people-lover and can often be found lying quietly at your feet, watching TV. He loves eating popcorn or having his tummy rubbed affectionately. He's great with other dogs and cats, especially larger dogs who can give him a run for his money. He loves his 3-mile walks and lives to run and play. He's still got an eye for the ladies, even though he was recently neutered, but the hormones will subside in time. He does really well on leash. Spike, 5 months Male Schnoodle
|

Adopted
Spike is not a lap dog as he is full of puppy energy and wants to play. Spike is not a put in a purse dog or a dog clothes kind of guy either, he is a 6 lb bundle of fun, fun and more fun. He likes to play with with other dogs, but smaller or gentler dogs would be great as he has no fear and doesn’t realize he's not a big dog. He has a huge ego and thinks he is the biggest baddest dog around. His foster mom named him Spike because no matter how much she brushes his fur, in 5 minutes it will be all spiky again.
He likes to sleep in bed with you and will not wake up until morning because he is exhausted from playing all day. He will sleep in his crate if need be, but she caved in because is so cute with his little head on the pillow -- she has spoiled him on this one indulgence. He has never had an accident in the house, but like any small dog he has a small bladder so needs someone at home to let him out. He is not one to sit in a crate all day — he would be miserable. She never chases the foster mom's cats, but also needs cats who will not chase him as he's a little guy and could get hurt. He will walk on leash and ride in the car -- he likes to ride shotgun and falls asleep instantly. So far, he has not been a chewer.
Spike is a great little guy and would thrive in an active household if he is kept socialized with other dogs. He will act really tough around dogs he doesn't know which given his size could get him in serious trouble — many small dogs do this. He is very loving and will just melt in your arms. If you are interested in adopting this scruffy little guy, please fill out an application. He is available for adoption, but in a foster home so would need to be brought to the shelter to meet you.

Titus, ~ 6 months Male Retriever / Chessie
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Look at that magnificent face!! Titus is a special pup (yes he's a pup) who was with his litter mates until around six months of age, so he can be shy at first, thus making it hard for him to get adopted. He wasn't exposed to children, so was afraid of them, but is doing much better with the teens. An adult home would be ideal. He would be fabulous at doggy daycare and it would help to socialize him as well. In time he will be a fantastic dog for someone. He REALLY needs another dog. He would be a great pal for another Lab or active dog. He's a Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix pup who has a nice thick coat that is made for swimming and out door sports. He is the darker coated male of the three. His mother dog was a Retriever who could have some Chesapeake Bay Retriever in her and the father was a Collie. A kind man took the mother dog in when she was pregnant and placed all but three of the pups, Tina, Titus, and Titan. He kept the Mom and had her spayed. His foster mom says about Titus: He has seemed to really come out of his shell and is a real love muffin. He plays ball, comes when called and is getting better on his leash. He gets very excited when I come home from a short trip out and seems to want to be with his people more . A good sign .
He's all puppy- bounds of energy and always game for activity. He learned to catch a tennis ball . ( Before he would just duck) He loves being outside and would stay in the yard all day if he could . I use cedercide, and I haven't found any ticks on him. He loves our dogs and plays well.
He has no issue going into his crate. If you are interested, please fill out an application on our Web site and we will be in touch with you as he is in a foster home and arrangements would need to be made for him to come to the shelter to meet you. He cannot come this weekend, the 12th, but will be here the following weekend, on the 20th if he has applications.
