Abby, ~ 3 years Female Beagle
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Abby is a ~ 3 yr old female Beagle mix who is originally from a shelter in rural Indiana. She is really sweet and is generally a very happy dog. She squeaks, barks, and makes noises when she's excited. She weighs about 25-30 lbs. She likes to go for walks and play with toys. Her foster mom says she likes to sit and watch TV with you and she has learned that the food is not for her. She listens well with house training, but could have a few accidents the first day or so. She is good in her crate. She loves men and seeks attention from men as well as women. She is learning not to pull on leash, but she just gets so excited at all the sights and smells outside. She loves to sniff, like a true beagle. If you fill out the online application, it speeds the adoption process and helps our adoption counselors to get to know you a little bit before you come in to the shelter to meet a dog. We try to make the right match for both dog and human. If you have them, please bring pictures of your residence and pictures of your last dog (if applicable) so that we can get a sense of you and your family and help you make the best match for both you and the dog.

Adopted
Clay is a 1.5 to 2 year old Retriever mixed with Redbone Coonhound and he's from TN. He is just the nicest dog and very deserving of a great home. He's a big boy with lots of love in his big heart. He weighs 60 lbs, is already neutered and is ready for a family of his own. He was dropped off in the middle of the night at the animal shelter in TN and was so starved they had to carry him in as he could not walk. He was a favorite at the shelter -- can you imagine! The workers just loved this guy and begged for him to be saved, as his time was almost up. So, Save a dog has given the green light for him to come to MA. You will not find a more loving dog or a dog with lower expectations, especially after all he's been through. He demands little from you and whatever you give him, seems to be ok with him. He is willing to learn anything you want. He has been very quiet at his foster home and is wonderful with all the other dogs. He takes long walks on the leash and his foster mom has been using a long lead to give him more freedom. It's so sweet -- he will be walking and when foster mom calls him back for for a pat on his head, he gets a surprised happy face, like he is amazed someone would want to give him love. He shows very little interest in cats but because of his size, introduce carefully. He is very quiet in his crate and keeps his kennel clean. If you would like to adopt Clay or another dog from Save A Dog, just fill out the application under Apply to Adopt and if he's not a match, we can apply it to another dog. he is available as of 3/17.

Emma, ~ 16 weeks Female Collie/Retriever

Adopted
Emma, Layla, and Reebock are Sadie's pups. You can see mama, Sadie, on our Recently Adopted pages under March 2012. Emma is 27 lbs., Reebok is 24 lbs., and Layla is 18 lbs. Mama Sadie is a mixed breed dog of Collie/hound, but the pups are heavy boned like a Lab.
Emma is a big sweet girl who is gentle, but loves to play all day. At her foster home in TN she slept on her bed at night, used the dog door, went potty outside. If she has toys she may chew on them, but she has not torn anything up. She is a very quiet and calm puppy! She has been started on a leash and does very well, but sometimes needs some postive encouragement. All 3 puppies have been introduced to cats. They did very well, but we worry more about the pups than the cats as cats will go for the eye, so if you have cats, you must assure us that they are gentle with puppies. These pups will be available on Sat, 3/17. If you fill out an application, we will have it ready when you arrive.

Hank, ~ 7 months Male Labrador Retriever
Mix

Adopted
Hank is a 7 month old fun-loving Chocolate Lab pup who would love a home where he can play, play, play. He loves to carry around a tennis ball and he is a typical lab in many ways. He will lay in the snow and even eat the snow all day long if you let him. He is already neutered and was born in July of 2011. Hank is super sweet, likes to ride in vehicles, and was an owner surrender because he was too active for their lap dog. He loves to play with other dogs, though, so would be great with another young Lab. Hank was raised with kids, but oddly enough he has been shy with some of the visiting children at Save A Dog, so we think he will need more socialization with kids. Hank walks well on leash, is very playful, and likes to fetch the ball . He's going to be a big dog so will need a safe place to run off leash. If families are interested, tweens and up would be best as he would definitely knock down a younger child.
Please apply online if you would like to consider this beautiful pup. He is available as of 3/1/12 and will be at our shelter Meet and Greet events this weekend.

Jackie, 3 years Female Jack Russell Terrier / Dachshund
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Jackie is a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier /Dachshund mix who is adorable and adoptable. She has been in foster care and is really an amazing dog. She adapted to her new life very quick and showed that she is house trained, crate trained, walks great on leash, is good with dogs of all sizes, people and cats, although is afraid of children (she shakes when children are present, so we don't know if it's lack of socialization). She has not been a barker, nor has she been hyper. She is an all around good little dog. She seems so calm for a JRT and she is much tinier than her picture makes her appear to be, weighing only 15 lbs. She had a sad life before her rescue. Her previous owners bought her as a pup and never even named her. She was tied on a chain to a dog house for 3 years and then they decided they didn't want her anymore (thank God) so brought her to the shelter. She is spayed and current on vaccines. She is available now. Please apply online to speed the process and we will be in touch with you about her.

She is not a dog to languish in the crate, but as with most young dogs, crate training is a must for her. She has already been started on clicker training and is very responsive. She is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and ready for her new home. She is available now.

Adopted
Katie is a ~5 year old spayed female Min Pin who is has so much to offer. She is fully house broken, walks beautifully on leash, and loves people, men and women.. She knows how to "sit pretty" and spins when you bring out a treat. She was probably an only dog as she's a little diva and she has great communication skills -- she's really tuned into you. We think she would love to be an only pet as she is so people-focused, craving for that one on one attention. We feel Katie would just love to have her own family and it could be a retired couple, or single or a multiple person home. She's so lovable! Her story is this and you won't believe it: she fell on hard times as she was found in a ditch taking care of her puppies. She's 11 lbs and is a nice peppy little dog (not a couch potato), sweet, and a cuddler. She is on Fromm Gold, a high quality food, so we're looking for an adopter who will treat her like a queen from here on out. She doesn't like sharing the human with other dogs so we think she would do best as an only dog. She is almost human herself, according to her foster. She listens to everything she says and seems to understand every word. She is in a foster home so please fill out the application so we can arrange for you to meet her. Please read up on our holistic protocol and fill out the application online so we can be in touch with you.

Koal has a found a wonderful home, but first he needs to have surgery on a dislocated hip and a tooth extraction. Please help us raise the funds for this wonderfully sweet dog. Read on for his story. Koal is a ~ 2 year old black Lab who was rescued from a horrific situation. His owner dragged him behind his truck. The man was arrested and Koal was rescued. It was then learned that Koal had a fractured hip (that had healed) from the same guy running him over with his ATV. Despite his ordeal, Koal is a joyful dog with a great sense of humor. He is so funny, when he gets excited, he will bounce up and down on all four feet, and just talk to you. He is crate trained and has never once lifted his leg inside. He gets along great with other dogs. He may always walk with a slight limp due to his injuries. We would like a loving owner who will treat Koal like gold from here on out. He loves everybody and is as easy-going as they come. He hesitates to get near a vehicle, understandably so, but once he is loaded he rides great. For everything this dog has been thru, he is a great companion. He weighs 65 lbs. Update: our vet found that he has a broken canine and a dislocated hip that will need attention before his adoption. This dog deserves the best home. Please help us raise the funds for this well-deserving dog.

Pete, formerly Apollo, was adopted in March 2011 and is being returned because his owners say he chases the cats. He's a cute dog who would make a great pal for someone. He is very energetic when outside and loves to run. He needs at least one very long walk a day and several short ones, but if he had a fenced in yard where he could run, he would be very happy. He's not a dog you can stick outside and forget about as he will escape to go find people to be with. He is a true companion animal. He originally lost his home when one of his owners passed away. He's a good dog. He's totally house broken and will not get into your stuff. You can trust him not to destroy anything. IIn the house, he's a couch potato and will sit and watch TV with you, so an older person home during the day would be fine as long as there's a younger person to run with him or take him for long walks at the end of the day. Ideally, a young working person living with a parent would work for him, but a couple who have flexible hours would work well too. Precious is a 3 year old, spayed female Italian Greyhound / Rat Terrier who was given up by her owner who could not afford to keep her. She is beyond adorable and has the IG personality. She just exudes cuteness. Everything about her says, Pick me up! What a dolly baby!!!! She is up to date on all shots and was spayed on January 17th. She is a quiet dog and hardly barks except on walks when she's so excited. She loves to be walked and is very happy when you take her walking. She knows the word "walk" and she's good on leash. She likes her crate and when she's not in her crate, she likes to lie on the couch. She loves to snuggle under a blanket. She does not like the cold or rain, typical of her breed so she will need a wardrobe. We're already working on that as you can see. She will go out in the rain if you bribe her with a treat. She's not wild about thunder storms either. She is a real lap dog. She is very loving, loves to go on walks, gets along well with all other dogs/cats, loves kids and people, is crate trained too. She has no food aggression at all so would be a good family dog. She is house trained and pee pad trained as well. If she goes with a family she will need a fenced in yard and a buffer between the front door and the outside because if the door opens, she's out like a flash. She would be great in an apt too as long as she's not stuck in all day. She was raised with a little girl so is gentle with children. She weighs 12 pounds. If you are interested in her, please help us by filling out the online application so we can get to know you a little and make the right match for both you and the dog. She will sit and let you pet her for hours; she lays at your feet while watching television. She rides in the car but does not really like it at first. She walks on a leash and loves to go for long walks. She loves to lay in the sun and watch for squirrels for hours. She is always on squirrel patrol. She will drag her blanket outside and lay on it. This girl's got personality! She is a little too curious with cats, but she seems gentle enough for kids. She is very docile towards other dogs. Because she loves the outdoors so much, she is not a dog to just go on a couple of walks a day, but if you also had a fenced in yard, she would love the option to go outside. She could be petted 24/7 and would love it! She is low-key energy-wise, so could go with a sedentary owner as well (as long as she gets her walks). A nice quiet household would be #1 on her wish list. Her TN foster mom wrote: Sadie is one of the sweetest, gentlest, loving dogs I have come across in a long time. I was so tempted to keep her for my own, she was very difficult to let go of... I am hoping you will pay special attention to the home that you choose for her. I had her in my house for 2-3 weeks, she never got into or tore up anything, she never once went to the bathroom in my house, she sleeps in all night on her bed.She loves to go for walks, gets excited when she sees the leash, and does not pull on the leash at all. She will sit and let you pet her for hours and then when you stop she will go lay down on her bed. She wants to play with other dogs. She had never been in a car and after 3 rides she was jumping up in the car ready to go. I would like to see her go with a family that likes to hike or at least takes walks.
Loud voices seem to make her nervous, but she does seem to love everyone!
Sadie does like to drag small blankets outside. I think if she had toys, she would stop doing that! She is available as of 3/6/12.

Adopted
Sammy is a very sweet 8 year old Rat Terrier? mix who was adopted from a shelter 3 years ago. His owner adores him and says he's the best dog in the whole world, but she works long hours and feels so bad for him being in a crate all day. His first owner was a senior so he is good with all ages of people. He lived with her for the first 4 years of his life and then she had to go to a nursing home. He loves just being at home with someone, hanging out. He has lived with dogs of all sizes and cats too so he is good with other pets. He will even play with the cats that like to play. He's great on leash and great in the car. Sammy is very healthy, he needs no meds. Every now and then he will hold up his back leg when he walks, but other than that he has no problems. He has been on glucosamine tabs but they never made a difference with him, so it could be a luxating patella, which is common in small breed dogs. Sammy loves his crate. He will just go sit in it for no reason. But he would prefer sitting/laying beside you on the couch or laying on your lap. He loves to sleep under the covers. He is 95% house trained. Like any small dog, he can't hold it all day and that's not his fault. He likes to be outside when it’s a sunny, warm day and he loves to go for walks. He knows he has to go outside to potty and is fine with that. He will wait at the back door for you to put the leash on and he will go outside to go. He has been trained with a leash to go outside and potty or to go for walks. Sammy will bark when he hears a doorbell or a knock at the door, but he's not a barker in general. He likes to eat Cheerios cereal with you every morning and loves the small eatable milk bones. He's really a good dog and would be a great companion for a senior or in a quiet household where someone is at home most of the day. That would be the ideal situation for him. He wasn't raised with kids so an adult home is preferred. He acts like a much younger dog and loves to play. He makes funny noises while playing with the other dogs, but is not aggressive at all.

Adopted
Stephanie is an ADORABLE petite black Lab/Whippet mix (DOB 4/23/11) who is looking for her forever home. She weighs 26 lbs and has lots of energy and loves to play. Her ears will stand straight up, or stick to the sides (like the Flying Nun). She can't get enough of belly rubs, and now knows how to climb in a lap and lay backwards so that she gets a full belly rub. When it is time to eat she runs into crate and does the ‘happy dance’ until her bowl of food arrives. She sleeps in her crate; she takes naps in her crate; she does NOT pee/poop in her crate. She has no fear of other dogs, and plays very well with the 5 other resident dogs (all sizes, big and small) – her favorite activity is to be chased by one or all of them. She LOVES to be the center of attention. She walks well on a leash, but gets a little skittish in high traffic areas. She gives me hugs and kisses for as long as I let her. She is tentative around strangers, but with a handful of treats she is quickly your best friend. She is getting much better at letting me know when it is time to go ‘out’. Stephanie must go to a home with a completely fenced in back yard, no exceptions. Please fill out an application if you'd like to meet Stephanie. She will be at the Meet and Greet on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

Trixie, 3 years Female Boston Terrier / Chihuahua
Mix

|
Adopted
Trixie is a 3 yr old sweetheart of a dog. She's a Boston Terrier / Chihuahua mix and is small (although the closeup makes her look like a much larger dog). She gets along with dogs and cats. She was living with 5 other dogs, including puppies jumping all over her, and cats swatting at her. She ignores the cat, is fine with the dogs, but really loves people the best. She's an attention hog so it would be great if she had her own person. She can live with chaos, but it would be nice if she had her own human to sleep with at night. She loves to walk on a leash, and with her foster mom in TN she walked off leash and did not run off (we recommend obedience training the recall command before trying it, though). She was fine with visiting children. She's housebroken and uses the dog door to go out. She loves the car. She is personality plus. She will sit next to you all night watching television, and wants to sleep all night in the bed; she likes to be covered with a blanket. She has a deep bark like a big dog so if you want a little dog who sounds like a big dog behind closed doors, she's ideal! Trixie has a sad story: she was picked up by animal control wandering the streets with a terrible case of Sarcoptic Mange. At the shelter she was 1 day away from being euthanized because no one came forward to care for her -- that is until an angel showed up. She is all free and clear now ( 2 vets have cleared her) of mange and she is a wonderful little dog. She deserves a happy indoor home with lots of love and attention! She is available now.
