Aladdin, 10 weeks Male Shepherd/Lab
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Aladdin and his littermate Jasmine are 10 week old Shepherd/Lab pups who are new arrivals so not available until 12/3 or thereafter. Please understand that we require puppy adopters to be at home, either working from home, have flexible hours, or trade off hours with a partner. Puppies can grow quickly and can be rough with small children, so they tend to do best with school aged and older. If you are interested, please fill out an online application so we can begin the adoption discussion. All our adopters receive a packet of information on training, health, and dog ownership. We do not believe in spaying/neutering young pups as they need hormones for proper growth, but we do reimburse a portion of your adoption donation after you have them altered at your vet when they mature. Please read our Holistic page for more information. A holistic approach to puppy and dog ownership will save you lots in vet care both now and when your dog is older.

Angie, ~ 4-5 months Female Golden Retriever

|
Adopted
Angie is a Golden mix puppy coming up from Indiana where she was abandoned. She's an adorable pup, sweet and playful. She's crate trained and learning house training. She arrives on Dec. 18 and is available after her health exam on Dec. 20th. We discourage impulse Christmas puppies or dogs as we are looking for forever homes for our rescued dogs, but if this is a time where you have several weeks off and/or familiy at home and have time to acclimate a new dog in your home, then we welcome you to come meet the dogs. Please keep in mind that we like the whole family to meet the dog (so gift dogs are not our policy). During the initial meeting, all decision-makers, i.e., adult caretakers need to be present. If you fill out the online application, it speeds the adoption process. Please bring pictures of your residence and pictures of your last dog (if applicable) so that we can get a sense of you and your family and help you make the best match for both you and the dog.

Austin, 10 years Male Australian Terrier
|

|
|
Adopted
Austin is a beautiful, little purebred Australian Terrier who needs a new home. He had a great home at one point in his life and he was even a therapy dog, but he fell on hard times and has been bounced around way too much. Despite the changes, he is friendly and happy with everyone who shows him any attention. He is estimated to be about 10 but certainly doesn't act it. He is peppy and loves to go for walks or to sit on the couch with you and watch TV. He is content to be with you and is very affectionate. He has diabetes and requires someone willing to give insulin shots and feed him a good diet. He requires two shots a day and is very cooperative. It really is no big deal for him. Save A Dog is willing to help with insulin and food if a senior or someone on a fixed income adopts him. He used to be a therapy dog! Please give him a chance. He was with one owner who gave him up when his lifestyle changed. The second adopter returned him because they didn't want to deal with the diabetes, so the agency transferred him to Save A Dog in hopes we would find him a loving home. He had his CGC (canine good citizens) certification at one time so might make a nice therapy dog. He is a great little dog who gets along with kids and dogs. He will chase cats, so a household with no cats would be best. He is housebroken, loves to play and still very active. He is a very easy, happy little dog. He even rings a bell when he needs to go outside. We thank his sponsors who helped pay for his medical work up. His sugar is normalized and he's gained weight so is looking awesome! Please give this sweet little dog a chance!

Axel, ~ 5 - 8 yrs Male Shepherd/Husky
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Axel is a Shepherd/Husky mixed with a few other breeds. He's a real Mutt. Our vet believes he is between 5 and 8 yrs old. He is excellent with other dogs and cats. His best friend was a cat that he slept and ate with and another friend was a small dog he played with. He loves to sit and give you “kisses”. He also loves people. He loves to run around and play but is not high energy.
He is not a dog to play with toys and will only show interest in small edible bones. He loves some gravy poured over hard kibble. Axel just wants a loving home. He wants to be with people. He will stay by your side and loves to walk. He hasn't had a lot of attention during the past few months so he learned to climb the chain link fence out of boredom, so he would go and explore, then come back. We don't want that situation for him ever again, especially in New England where there are many more cars than in rural Indiana where he's from. He arrives on Dec. 18 and is available after a health exam on Dec. 20th. We discourage impulse Christmas dogs as we are looking for forever homes for our rescued dogs, but if this is a time where you have several weeks off and/or familiy at home and have time to acclimate a new dog in your home, then we welcome you to come meet the dogs. Beau, ~ 1 year Male Golden
|
|
Adopted
Beau is a Golden Retriever who recently came to us with his three puppies Chance, Faith, and Lyla. He is used to kids and dogs and is very friendly. He is new to the leash, but we are working on that. He was an outside dog who was never crated, so he was sad in his run at the kennel until we let one of his puppies come in to sleep with him. He's a tender soul who would love to have a quiet, experienced home. Because Goldens are prone to cancer, we are looking for an adopter who would follow our holistic protocol, minimizing vaccines, feeding nutritious food, and avoiding pesticide-laden flea/tick products. He will be neutered prior to adoption. Please fill out an online application and we will be in touch. He will be available after 12/10/11.

Been Jamin' is 1 1/2 yrs. (She was originally named Benjamin, but then they discover "he" was a "she" so put a spin on the name. Adopters are welcome to change the name. Her fur is Blonde like a Cairn, but thicker. She possibly has Norfolk terrier in her, we're not sure. She is not hypo-allergenic, just a low shedder. She was picked up running on the road of the shelter, no one claimed her. She does like to chase birds, so be on alert when walking her, because she is fast. She is calm, sometimes even acts shy, but she is really just checking out her surroundings to see what she wants to investigate first, walks good on lead. She is just a little taller than an American Cocker Spaniel. She arrives on Dec. 18 and is available after her health exam on Dec. 20th. Belle and her littermates are 12 week old Pomeranians (DOB 09/02/11) who have been in our care for several months. They came in with their mother Becky who is a purebred Pom and apparently were given up by a breeder. All look to be purebred and all are very sweet puppies. Belle weighs around 2 1/2 lbs. She is quite forward and confident. Her foster mom thinks she would take over the planet if she could. She has a lot of energy but can also be quiet and sweet. We require stay-at-home or work-from-home familes for puppies this young. These pups are still with their mother and other littermates so they have good bite inhibition and wonderful temperaments. The mom, Becky, is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. She is available for adoption as well. All are in a foster home so we do require an application before arranging for you to meet them. They have been holistically raised with some raw meat in their diet and were not given their vaccines too young as the vaccines are more effective on the 12 week old puppy than on the 8 week old. All were weaned naturally when they were ready. Please be willing to follow our holistic protocol (which you can read about on our Web site).

Bobby and his sister, Ellie Mae are 10 week old pups. They are sweet pups who need stay at home situations so that they can be properly socialized. They seem to have some bully breed in the mix, but the paperwork says "Boxer". Update from his foster: Bobby is doing great. He was a little timid at first but not anymore- he is now sleeping on his pee pad- which by the way he uses- no accidents!-out in the big area. Chases balls, climbs atop puppy pen trying to get out and barks at the cats unless they are to close then he smartly keeps quiet...He goes out with the big boys (they are not so sure what to make of him!) he chases all balls, leaves and vicious pine cones!
Once outside he pees and poops! Will see if this lasts! When we call him he comes right up to the back door like the big boys and in we all go! And then he promptly falls fast asleep- nap time. He loves to eat play and sleep- so I guess he is doing great! Please fill out the online application if you would like to meet Bobby to speed the process. ELLIE MAE WILL NOT BE AT THE WEEKEND MEET AND GREETS ON DEC. 17TH AND 18TH.

Emma is an adorable and SMART puppy. Her foster mom says: She can hold her own with all the other big dogs in the house. She eats great and lets you know when it is time to go out. She tries to hoard all the toys, treats, etc. But I can tell she is very smart. She's also very agile. She does not get car sick either, which is a real plus! History: Chandler, Emma, Joey, Monica, Nora, Phoebe, and Rachel were born in early June to their mother, Ginger, who is a beautiful, mild-tempered, gentle 30 lb. red Heeler/Collie mix. They have all been fostered since 5 weeks old and are good with all animals and respectful of cats and are very horse-savvy as their pen was next to the horse corral. Because they spent extra time with the mother and with their litter, they are not mouthy like typical pups. They are a little shy with people at first and in new situations. All the previous pups who were adopted are doing fine, so we expect the same for the remaining pups. They are playful and normal acting pups. They all have sweet temperaments. Please fill out an application on our Web site and we will be in touch with you within a few days. Emma is currently in a foster home.

Jasper came from a family with a lot of children and he was like a toddler himself in that he craved attention and wanted to be carried around like a baby. He walks well on a leash. She's clearly smart but sensitive and sometimes is shy with new people. She likes to chase squirrels and cats, so no cats for her! She is currently getting at least 4 walks and/or runs a day which is typical for a Lab-type dog. She has gone to a couple of obedience classes and is working on her sit, stay, come, leave it, walking on leash, etc. Josie is happy and playful, but relatively calm for a one year old dog. She loves having her belly scratched. She is ok with other dogs but can be reactive on leash, so will need some leash work. She has been introduced to small children a few times and done very well (calm and quiet). She would flourish in a home where someone either works from home or is a stay at home. She also loves the outdoors and would be a great pal for hiking, jogging, etc. Please fill out an application online if you are interested in meeting Josie.

Lily, ~ 8 mo - 1 yr Female Beagle/Shepherd/Corgi
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Lily is a sweet ~ 8 mo. to 1 yr old Mutt. We're not sure what her mix is, but she has a beautifully rich colored coat and a sweet personality. She was rescued along with Daisy. They were squeezed in a small cage together and in bad condition when rescued in TN. They have been given good care for the past few weeks and are now spayed and up to date on vaccines. Update from Lily's foster: "Lily has adjusted quickly. She was very calm in the car ride here. She is very good with large adult male dogs- she shows respect! She is curious with cats and barks when she feels threatened but backs away- she does not chase. She is good with my nephew who is 11. She comes when called - really well by whistle, sits on command, calms down after running ricochet in yard! She is very attentive. She eats well, has had no mistakes in the house, and is excellent on leash. She is a very sweet girl who needs a forever home- deserves one." Please fill out an online application if you are interested in meeting Lily to speed the process.

Adopted
Mandy is a 5 yr old (actual dob 12/1/2006) purebred Black/White Shih Tzu, who was taken in by her groomer when her owner passed away suddenly. The groomer had known her since she was a puppy. Mandy was found laying beside her owner on the floor when the daughter found her. Mandy was her owner's whole life; she always said that Mandy was more human than dog. She knew exactly what her owner was going to do before she did it. Because her owner was so over weight, she trained Mandy on puppy pads because she couldn't always get Mandy Sue outside fast enough. Mandy is crate trained and seems to be house trained too as she will do her business outside now. She gets along better with dogs her size or smaller, and is hesitant around bigger dogs. Mandy Sue is highly allergic to fleas, and will scratch instantly if one bites her. She is possibly also allergic to any dog food that has food coloring, so we feed her Fromm Adult. She has never been with children and can get possessive of her toys, so an adult dog-savvy home is preferred for her. She recently had a dental cleaning and also had surgery to remove a mammory a tumor. She is an adorable dog who has a lot of years to offer. We're hoping that someone who knows the breed will step up and adopt her, but also someone dog-savvy is fine too. She went to a holiday party this past weekend and did fine. She is showing us more and more great qualities and friendly behaviors so we think she was just terrified being in the kennel as she'd always slept in her mommy's bed. We've had many other small breed dogs who were terrified in a kennel, but were wonderful outside that environment and Mandy is no different. Please fill out an application if you'd like to meet her.

Oscar, 2 years Male Schnoodle
Mix

Adopted
Oscar was found as a stray and brought to a rural shelter in Indiana. He is approx. 2 yrs. old, weighs 22.5, and he could be a Schnoodle, or a Cairn mix. The blue eye points to mini Aussie, but we just don't know. He definitely has hair that needs to be groomed every so often. He is not totally allergenic. His fur is chocolate with whisps of long white fur. He has one blue eye, and sometimes one ear stands up, while the other one lays down, and then when he gets really excited, they both may stick straight out. He is a very sweet boy, that enjoys being carried around, or just laying close by. He does enjoy long walks, and chasing the birds. He is a young dog so loves to play. He arrives on Dec. 18 and is available after his health exam on Dec. 20th. We discourage impulse Christmas puppies or dogs as we are looking for forever homes for our rescued dogs, but if this is a time where you have several weeks off and/or familiy at home and have time to acclimate a new dog in your home, then we welcome you to come meet the dogs. Adopted
Pearl is a darling little one year old Powder Puff Chinese Crested dog. Her birthday is 08/07/10. She is non-shedding, smart, charming, agile, sometimes comical, sometimes pensive, and always perched on the back of a sofa. She is such a darling dog and a favorite of all the volunteers. She would flourish in an all female home as she can be very shy around men. It's not that she was abused, but just not socialized with them. She has actually come around quite a bit with the young man in her foster home who is home often during the day. It shows that she can evenutally warm up to men. She loves other dogs, but smaller ones are preferred (30 lbs and under). She hasn't been cat tested, but most Cresteds are great with cats. She was not raised with little children, but would be fine with teens and would especially love some dog friends. She adores the other dogs in her foster home. Pearl loves to go for walks and enjoys running around the back yard. When first rescued, she was anemic, but is totally healthy now. She is spayed and ready for her forever home. She will make someone an awesome little pal. If you are interested in meeting Pearl, please fill out an online application at www.saveadog.org and someone will get back to you within 24 to 48 hours.

Princess is a tiny ~6 - 7 year old female Pom mix who is a total lap dog. She weighs 7 lbs and is a very low shedding dog. She is a sweet little dog, who just wants to be a lap dog. She was returned recently because she did not want to share her person's lap with the resident cat. She is a little timid when you first meet her, but she warms up quickly. Her foster Mom says she just loves to sit in your lap, no matter WHERE you are sitting! She likes to lounge on the steps and watch the world go by out the front door, snooze in her bed, or follow her humans around. Princess is doing great on her leash training. She's also doing great with housetraining, no accidents recently. She does pretty well in a crate but a full time worker would not be a good fit for Princess. She would do really well with either a stay at home or someone who only works part time. She gets along very well with other dogs too. Her favorite thing to do is to curl up at her foster's feet while she is working at her home office desk. She also enjoys jumping into your lap and snuggling. No small children for Princess as she is a petite little girl. A fenced-in yard would be a plus. She is available now. Please give this adorable litte girl a chance at a forever home!

Sophie, ~ 7 years Female Australian Shepherd/Retriever
Mix
|
|
Adopted
Sophie is a 7 year old, 40 lb herding breed / retriever mix. She is fully house trained and walks well on leash. She's good with other dogs. She loves to play with you and her toys.
Sophie recently lost her home because the two toddlers were playing rough and she had been put on the backburner not getting enough attention or exercise. Older kids would be great for her or an adult home where she could get her own attention and exercise would be a dream situation for her. She can be reserved in new situation, but has a gentle, tolerant nature. She will need some help with gaining confidence in new situations, so a patient owner who is willing to read up on dog behavior or work with a trainer, would be great. At home Sophie loves to sit quietly near or besides her foster mom but does well to have activities like walks in the park and chasing a ball.
Please apply online as she is in a foster home and we would need to arrange for her to be brought to Save A Dog to meet you. It will save us time if all decision-makers come together.

Toby, ~1 year Male Rat Terrier / Jack Russell

Adopted
Toby is a small ADORABLE male short-haired terrier who has a HUGE heart. This dog has a soul, you can just see it in his eyes, in his whole expression. Whoever adopts him is going to be so lucky. We wouldn't be surprised if a book was written about him some day. This is one amazing dog who is going to blossom in your home. Like many of our rescues, he was a stray, nobody's dog, unwanted. Hard to believe. But now he is loved and adored by all the volunteers at Save A Dog. Toby is sweet, affectionate and playful. When He greets his people he will try to jump into your arms for hug and kisses. He loves kids and we recommend 10 and up for him. He is afraid of cats, so no cats, please. He can be timid with some men. He has now recovered from an infection in his larynx, probably caused by the intubation during his neuter surgery. He is doing great! When he was rescued he was wandering around a neighborhood in rural TN and people were threatening to shoot him, can you imagine!! Nevertheless, there are angels looking after these dogs because a kind dog lover rescued him, had him neutered and brought him to us to be adopted. If you want to be considered for this little gem, the best way to start the process is to apply online. It's free and it allows us to begin the adoption conversation with you. If you would like to donate towards Toby's medical work-up, we would sure appreciate it. Toby's foster mom says: He is smart, playful and very affectionate. He is great in his crate, on a leash and doesn’t bark in the house. He settles down beautifully and loves bully sticks, peanut butter kongs and his daily walks in the woods. I think he would really like to play with another small dog. He likes to play with Ginger but only up to a point b/c of her size and intensity, even then he holds his own! He loves to chase toys in the back yard and will try to run with stuffed animals almost as big as he is, very amusing. When he gets excited he puts his ears back and crouches down and then springs up and runs in circles. He really wants to bond with his people. Although initially leery of my husband and to a lesser extent my kids he now smothers them with kisses whenever he can. He can be nervous in new situations and around big dogs. Over time he gains confidence and comes out of his shell though. He also gets very nervous when big noisy trucks drive by, but even that has gotten better since he has been here. He is in a foster home so we require an application first so we can arrange for him to be brought to the shelter for the meeting.
